Lucknow— Police have filed an FIR against Anubhav Mittal, the key accused in a ₹3,700-crore cyber fraud case, for allegedly sending a threatening email to a judge of the Allahabad High Court using a police constable’s mobile phone. The email reportedly warned of a plot to murder a judge of the Lucknow bench.
Officials said Mittal, who is lodged in Lucknow jail for duping nearly seven lakh investors through a fake online trading scheme, sent the message under a false identity to frame another inmate. An investigation by the Cyber Cell and Crime Branch traced the email’s origin to the phone of constable Ajay Kumar, who was posted at the Police Lines.
According to police, the constable had accompanied Mittal to court on November 4. Mittal allegedly borrowed his phone, claiming he wanted to check his case status, and secretly created a new email account. He then set a timer for the message to be sent automatically the next morning.
The FIR, registered on Friday, names both Mittal and Ajay Kumar under charges of criminal intimidation and violations of the IT Act. Investigators believe Mittal’s intent was to implicate another prisoner, Anandeshwar Agrahari, who has been in jail since December 2023 for murder.
Mittal was arrested by a Special Task Force in 2017 and is currently facing 324 criminal cases related to one of India’s largest cyber scams. His wife, Ayushi Mittal, and father, Sunil Mittal, are also accused and remain in judicial custody.
