CRPF to Take Charge of Vice President’s Security with ‘Z+’ Cover

New Delhi: The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is preparing to assume responsibility for the security of India’s Vice President, who will now be protected under the high-level ‘Z+’ security umbrella, according to official sources.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) recently conducted a fresh threat assessment, after which it directed that the Vice President’s close protection duties be transferred to the CRPF. While a formal notification is still awaited, the force has reportedly received verbal instructions and may begin implementing the new arrangements as early as Wednesday.

Under the revised security grid, the CRPF’s specially trained VIP protection commandos will provide round-the-clock close security to the Vice President. Meanwhile, Delhi Police will continue handling outer-layer responsibilities such as access regulation, perimeter management, and external cordon duties.

The ‘Z+’ category, among the highest levels of security in India, typically involves the deployment of over 55 armed personnel, including escorts and technical support staff. Personnel assigned to such protection are not only equipped with advanced weaponry but are also trained in counter-terror operations, high-risk evacuation, and close-quarter combat.

Officials noted that the changes are in line with updated Blue Book guidelines—the comprehensive manual that prescribes security protocols for senior constitutional authorities. The CRPF already provides similar cover to several other high-profile individuals deemed vulnerable, and the Vice President’s inclusion marks an extension of this responsibility.

The decision reflects the government’s approach to strengthening protective measures around the country’s top leadership amid evolving threat perceptions.
