New Delhi: In a significant development aimed at strengthening drug safety measures, the Union Health Secretary is set to chair a video conference with health officials from all States and Union Territories, according to government sources.
The virtual meeting will bring together Principal Secretaries and Health Secretaries, along with Drug Controllers across the country, to discuss two critical issues: ensuring the rational use of cough syrups and reinforcing the quality standards of pharmaceutical products.
This move comes amid growing concern over the misuse and substandard quality of certain medicinal syrups, especially in pediatric care. While India is a major player in the global pharmaceutical market, recent incidents involving contaminated medicines have put the spotlight on the need for tighter regulation and quality control.
The meeting will also explore mechanisms to ensure that manufacturers strictly adhere to safety norms and regulatory guidelines.
The Centre is expected to emphasize the importance of coordinated efforts between state drug regulatory bodies and central agencies to safeguard public health. Additionally, guidance may be issued to states to step up inspections of pharmaceutical units and report any deviations promptly.
The outcome of the meeting could shape future policies around drug safety, particularly concerning pediatric formulations and over-the-counter medications, and may pave the way for more stringent oversight in the pharmaceutical sector.
