New Delhi: Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand is set to arrive in New Delhi today, kicking off a key diplomatic visit aimed at strengthening Indo-Canadian cooperation in strategic sectors such as trade, energy, and security.
Her visit marks the start of a broader regional tour that includes stops in Singapore and China. In India, Anand will hold comprehensive discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, focusing on advancing a roadmap for deeper bilateral engagement, according to diplomatic sources.
Officials from both sides have indicated that discussions will prioritize expanding economic collaboration, diversifying trade relations, advancing clean energy transitions, and enhancing security cooperation. The two countries are exploring the creation of a structured framework for long-term strategic partnership in these areas.
A statement released by Canadian officials highlighted that the foreign minister’s itinerary includes a stop in Mumbai, where she will engage with business leaders and representatives from Canadian and Indian companies. These meetings are expected to center around boosting investment flows, creating employment opportunities, and fostering cross-border economic growth.
Anita Anand’s arrival comes shortly after Canadian National Security Adviser Nathalie Drouin held in-depth discussions with her Indian counterpart, Ajit Doval, in late September. The two reportedly discussed a range of security-related matters, indicating a warming of ties after a period of strained diplomatic engagement.
Notably, in a move seen as aligning with New Delhi’s concerns, Canada recently designated the Lawrence Bishnoi criminal network as a terrorist entity, citing its involvement in acts of violence and attempts to sow fear among certain communities.
This renewed diplomatic momentum follows a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then Canadian Prime Minister-designate Mark Carney during the G7 summit in Kananaskis earlier this year. Their conversation is believed to have laid the groundwork for ongoing efforts to reinvigorate bilateral ties.
