New Delhi: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved an investment of Rs 8,146.21 crore for the construction of the 700 MW Tato-II Hydro Electric Project in Shi Yomi district, Arunachal Pradesh. The project is expected to be completed in 72 months, according to an official statement.
With an installed capacity of 700 MW (4×175 MW), the project is projected to generate 2,738.06 million units (MU) of electricity annually, strengthening the power supply in Arunachal Pradesh and helping balance the national grid.
The project will be executed through a joint venture between the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd. (NEEPCO) and the Government of Arunachal Pradesh.
The Centre will provide Rs 458.79 crore for enabling infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and transmission lines, along with Rs 436.13 crore in central financial assistance for the state’s equity share. Arunachal Pradesh will receive 12% free power and an additional 1% for the Local Area Development Fund (LADF).
As part of Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, the project will promote local procurement, boost MSMEs, and create direct and indirect jobs. It will also lead to 32.88 km of new roads and bridges, primarily for local use, and fund ₹20 crore worth of community infrastructure including hospitals, schools, marketplaces, and playgrounds.
The government said the initiative will also deliver benefits through compensation packages, employment opportunities, and CSR activities aimed at socio-economic development in the region.
