New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday underlined the Union government’s focus on social justice and inclusive development while addressing a joint session of Parliament, marking the beginning of the Budget Session 2026.

As the President began her speech, members from Opposition parties raised objections, leading to brief disruptions in the House. Despite the uproar, Murmu continued her address, outlining the government’s achievements and priorities.

Highlighting the expansion of welfare programmes, the President said social security coverage has been extended to nearly 95 crore people across the country. She described this as a significant step towards building a more equitable society.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to inclusive growth, Murmu said sustained policy efforts over the past decade have helped around 25 crore people rise above poverty. She added that during the government’s third term, renewed emphasis is being placed on strengthening measures aimed at empowering economically weaker sections.

The President also pointed to efforts to curb corruption and eliminate large-scale irregularities, stating that mechanisms have been put in place to ensure transparent and effective use of public funds.

Her address outlined the government’s broader vision of development rooted in fairness, accountability and upliftment of the underprivileged, setting the tone for the legislative agenda in the days ahead. (Budget Session 2026)
