Kutch, Gujarat: In a significant security operation, the Border Security Force (BSF) apprehended 15 Pakistani fishermen for allegedly crossing into Indian waters through the Kori Creek region in Gujarat’s Kutch district. The incident occurred around 9 a.m., when BSF personnel, acting on independent intelligence, intercepted the group deep within the marshy stretches of Kori Creek, a sensitive border zone along the India-Pakistan maritime boundary.

Along with the intruders, the BSF also seized a country boat equipped with an engine, believed to have been used for the illegal crossing. All individuals detained were subsequently handed over to the local police for further questioning and investigation, officials confirmed.

A Region of Strategic Concern

Kori Creek, situated in the Rann of Kutch, is part of a vast and ecologically fragile delta system that includes Harami Nala and Sir Creek. These regions are notorious for frequent maritime boundary violations by fishermen from Pakistan, often citing poor navigational tools or lack of clarity about the exact boundary line.

Despite being largely uninhabited, the area remains of strategic and economic significance and continues to pose serious challenges to border security due to its difficult terrain, lack of physical markers, and tidal marshlands.

A BSF spokesperson stated, “The region remains under constant surveillance, and we are committed to safeguarding the maritime border from illegal intrusion. Operations in the area are routinely conducted to curb such unauthorized entries.”

A Recurring Challenge

This is not the first time that such an infiltration has occurred in the Kori Creek sector. Similar incidents have taken place in recent years, with Pakistani nationals often being detained for straying into Indian waters — either unintentionally while fishing or as part of more questionable activities. The ambiguous demarcation of this section of the India-Pakistan maritime border continues to complicate enforcement efforts.

Experts note that such violations, while often non-violent and involving civilians, carry wider geopolitical implications. The Sir Creek dispute, of which Kori Creek is a geographical extension, remains an unresolved bilateral issue between New Delhi and Islamabad, impacting not just border enforcement but also access to valuable maritime resources.
