GUWAHATI — A cab driver has been taken into police custody in Guwahati after confessing to the gruesome murder of his wife, whose decapitated and decomposing body was discovered inside their residence with the severed head wrapped in plastic inside a refrigerator. The suspect, identified as Ramanuj Goswami, surrendered before law enforcement authorities on Monday, stating that he killed his wife, Riya Talukdar, in a fit of rage over suspicions regarding an alleged extramarital affair.
The gruesome crime came to light after concerned family members reported that they had been unable to reach the couple for two consecutive days. A police team dispatched from the Hatigaon station arrived at the couple’s flat to find the front door unlocked and the partially decomposed, headless body of Talukdar lying on the floor. A subsequent search of the premises revealed the victim’s severed head concealed inside a polythene bag stored in the household fridge.
Investigators confirmed that the murder weapon, a machete, has been recovered from the crime scene. During preliminary questioning, Goswami disclosed that an intense argument erupted between the pair on September 3, lasting into the early hours of the following morning before turning fatal. The couple had been married for less than a year; Goswami originally hailed from Dhubri district, while Talukdar, who previously worked in a boutique, was a local Guwahati resident. Police officials stated that active interrogations and forensic reviews are continuing to verify the husband’s statements and reconstruct the full sequence of events leading up to the homicide.
