Guwahati: Assam’s flood crisis has claimed 82 lives, even as the overall situation has shown signs of gradual improvement with the number of affected people declining to around 1.92 lakh, according to the latest update from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). Two fresh fatalities were reported from Sivasagar and Charaideo districts, taking the overall death toll higher.
Relief and rehabilitation efforts continue across the affected regions, with state authorities working to restore essential services and provide food, shelter, and medical assistance to displaced residents.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the state government has prioritised the welfare of students in flood-hit districts. He announced financial assistance from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) for replacing damaged textbooks, repairing schools, and carrying out cleaning work to help educational institutions resume normal functioning at the earliest.
In another major relief initiative, the Assam government has approved ₹41.67 crore under the pending state subsidy component of the PM Surya Ghar scheme for 9,289 beneficiaries residing in the four worst-affected districts. The Chief Minister directed the Power Department and Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) to ensure that the subsidy amount is credited directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts by Tuesday.
The flood relief efforts have also received support from the private sector and civil society. Industrialist Gautam Adani has contributed ₹11 crore to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to strengthen ongoing rescue and rehabilitation operations. The Muslim Rashtriya Manch (MRM) has also announced financial assistance for families affected by the floods.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that rainfall activity is likely to remain active across the Northeast over the coming days. The weather agency has forecast widespread rainfall across Assam and Meghalaya until August 5, with the possibility of isolated heavy showers. Similar weather conditions are expected over Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, raising concerns that recovery operations could face further challenges.
Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert, avoid flood-prone locations, and closely follow official advisories as the monsoon continues to impact the region. While water levels have receded in several places, officials caution that the risk of fresh flooding and waterlogging remains due to the forecast of continued rainfall.
