New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday conducted an extensive review of the country’s disaster-response preparedness during a high-level meeting in New Delhi, with a special focus on tackling potential flood emergencies and intensifying heatwave conditions in the coming months.
The meeting brought together senior officials to assess the current state of readiness and examine measures aimed at minimising risks posed by extreme weather events across vulnerable regions.
A major point of discussion was the strengthening of flood forecasting mechanisms through the use of advanced technology, improved weather modelling and seamless real-time data sharing among agencies. Officials emphasised the need for faster alerts and stronger coordination to ensure timely evacuation and preventive action in flood-prone areas.
The Home Minister also reviewed preparedness for handling overlapping disasters, particularly scenarios where flood situations could coincide with prolonged heatwave spells, creating added pressure on emergency infrastructure and public services.
Officials presented plans focused on improving coordination between state and central agencies to ensure quicker response capabilities in such situations.
Community-level awareness and resilience-building initiatives were also highlighted during the review. The Centre stressed the importance of educating citizens in vulnerable areas about precautionary measures and emergency response protocols to reduce casualties and property loss during disasters.
Another key aspect of the meeting was ensuring the availability of relief supplies, including food stocks, drinking water, shelter arrangements and emergency medical support. Authorities were directed to maintain adequate reserves and ensure that rapid deployment systems remain fully operational.
The review comes as several parts of the country brace for seasonal weather challenges, with forecasts indicating above-normal temperatures in some regions and the possibility of heavy rainfall activity in others as monsoon systems begin to evolve.
The Centre has directed all concerned agencies to remain on high alert and maintain constant monitoring to respond swiftly to any developing weather-related emergencies.
