Chandigarh: The Haryana government ordered the suspension of mobile internet and bulk SMS services in Charkhi Dadri and Bhiwani districts until 2:00 PM on August 21 in the wake of rising tension following the alleged murder of a girl named Manisha.
According to an order issued by the state Home Department, the restrictions have been imposed to prevent the spread of rumours, inflammatory content, and misinformation through social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter). Authorities fear such content could trigger unrest, damage to property, and threats to public safety.
The suspension covers 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G, CDMA and GPRS mobile internet services, bulk SMS (excluding banking and mobile recharge services), and all dongle-based data services. However, essential services such as voice calls, individual SMS, mobile banking and recharge facilities, as well as broadband connections will continue to function.
Officials said the step was taken after requests from senior police officers, citing the possibility of public disorder, vandalism, and violent activities in the affected areas. The government has directed all telecom providers to comply strictly with the suspension order.
The notification further warns that anyone found violating the directive will face legal action under relevant laws.
The curbs are aimed at ensuring peace and maintaining law and order, as local residents and police remain on alert following the incident.
