MOHALI, April 16, 2026: The Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab Government has taken a major step towards strengthening law enforcement by partnering with the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based policing systems. The initiative aims to enhance the state’s crackdown on organised crime, particularly targeting gangster networks operating both within India and from abroad.

This move is expected to significantly strengthen ongoing anti-crime campaigns such as “Gangstran Te Vaar” and “Yudh Nashean Virudh,” by equipping Punjab Police with advanced technological tools for intelligence-based policing.

AI-Based System to Map and Track Criminal Networks

Under this collaboration, the Punjab Government will develop a structured digital database of criminals using AI-driven tools. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between IIT Ropar and Dr. BR Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences, Mohali, which will serve as a key coordination hub for the project.

The Data Intelligence and Technical Support Unit, stationed at AIMS Mohali, will act as the central node to facilitate coordination between technical experts and law enforcement agencies.

As part of the project, IIT Ropar will design advanced software systems equipped with data analytics, voice recognition, and real-time monitoring dashboards. These tools will enable Punjab Police to track criminal activities more efficiently and dismantle organised networks, including those operating from foreign countries.

Integration of Structured and Unstructured Data

One of the key features of the initiative is the creation of a unified and comprehensive criminal database. The system will integrate both structured and unstructured data, including handwritten records, scanned PDFs, and legacy police documents.

Officials said that a large portion of existing police data remains scattered in non-digital or unstructured formats, which often delays investigations. The new AI system will digitise and organise such data, converting it into actionable intelligence.

By merging all available information into a single platform, the system will allow instant access to critical data, enabling faster decision-making and improved investigative outcomes.

Boost to Intelligence-Led Policing and Crime Detection

The Punjab Government emphasised that the use of AI and machine learning will help law enforcement agencies move towards predictive policing. Advanced analytical tools will identify crime patterns, anticipate threats, and assist in real-time tracking of suspects.

A senior Punjab Police official stated that the collaboration will enhance the force’s ability to recognise crime patterns and respond proactively. He added that this initiative will play a crucial role in strengthening the “Gangstran Te Vaar” campaign and curbing the misuse of technology by criminal networks.

The official also highlighted that many gangsters operate from abroad and use local networks to carry out crimes. With AI-based tracking and analysis, the police will be better equipped to identify such networks and disrupt their operations.

Focus on Real-Time Monitoring and Faster Action

The AI-powered system will include dashboard-based monitoring tools that provide real-time updates on criminal activities. This will enable authorities to act swiftly and coordinate operations more effectively.

Officials said the system will allow police personnel to analyse large volumes of data quickly, identify connections between cases, and generate insights that were previously difficult to obtain through manual methods.

The initiative will also help bridge the gap between different data sources, ensuring that all relevant information is connected and accessible through a single platform.

Towards Safer Punjab Through Technology

The Punjab Government stated that this initiative marks a significant shift towards technology-driven governance and modern policing practices. By leveraging AI, the state aims to stay ahead of evolving criminal methods and enhance public safety.

The project is expected to improve crime detection rates, strengthen monitoring of organised crime networks, and enable faster, data-driven decision-making across law enforcement agencies.

With this collaboration, Punjab is positioning itself at the forefront of adopting advanced technologies in policing, aiming to build a safer and more secure environment for its citizens.
