Call for Greater Public Participation to Expand Green Cover Across Haryana
Chandigarh: Haryana Cabinet Ministers, Minister of State, Members of Parliament and other dignitaries on Friday led plantation drives across the State under the second phase of the 77th Van Mahotsav and the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, calling upon citizens to make environmental conservation a mass movement.
Participating in plantation programmes at different locations, they stressed that tree plantation and the protection of saplings are essential to address the challenges of climate change, rising pollution, depleting groundwater and shrinking green cover. They urged every citizen to plant at least one sapling and nurture it into a tree, reiterating that building a greener Haryana requires collective public participation under the leadership of Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.

Planting a sapling at the Mini Secretariat complex in Sonipat, Education Minister Mahipal Dhanda said rising pollution and climate change have made tree plantation and the protection of saplings an urgent necessity. Describing ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ as a meaningful initiative that strengthens people’s emotional connect with nature, he appealed to citizens to plant trees at homes, offices and public places and ensure their survival. He said the saplings planted today would ensure cleaner air, greener surroundings and a healthier future for generations to come.

Addressing the district-level Van Mahotsav at Jalebi Chowk in Rohtak, Cooperation, Prisons, Elections, Heritage and Tourism Minister Dr. Arvind Kumar Sharma said the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of environmental conservation and sustainable development. Recalling the oxygen shortage during the COVID-19 pandemic, he said expanding green cover is vital for the future. He urged citizens to actively participate in plantation drives and stressed the need for greater engagement with youth to build a greener and more responsible society.

He said trees are essential for ecological balance, groundwater recharge and climate moderation, urging every citizen to plant at least one sapling and take responsibility for its care until it becomes a tree.

Addressing the second phase of the 77th District Van Mahotsav at village Raghkhera in Jind, Haryana Vidhan Sabha Deputy Speaker Dr. Krishan Lal Middha said climate change, pollution and shrinking forest cover have made environmental conservation a global priority. He urged students and youth to plant saplings on birthdays and other special occasions and ensure their care, saying tree plantation must become a sustained people’s movement.

Launching the Assembly-level Van Mahotsav at the HSVP Green Belt and Goraiya Tourism Centre in Bahadurgarh, Jhajjar, Rajya Sabha MP Kartikeya Sharma said environmental conservation is closely linked to the future and called upon the youth to lead the plantation movement. Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) initiative, he said expanding green cover is one of the most effective ways to combat pollution and climate change, particularly in the NCR region. Addressing the district-level Van Mahotsav at Jalebi Chowk in Rohtak, BJP Haryana President Dr. Archana Gupta urged citizens to reduce the use of paper, tissue paper, wedding invitation cards and cardboard products by adopting digital alternatives and reusable materials. She said environmental conservation requires not only planting more trees but also protecting and nurturing every sapling. She also called upon people to plant more trees and ensure their protection, saying environmental conservation depends not only on plantation but also on the long-term care of saplings.
