New Delhi: The Government of India has announced that legendary Malayalam actor Mohanlal will be honoured with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2023. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting confirmed the decision on Saturday, stating that it was made on the recommendation of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award Selection Committee.
The ministry praised Mohanlal’s extraordinary cinematic journey, describing it as an inspiration for generations. It highlighted his versatility, dedication, and the powerful impact of his performances, which have set new benchmarks in Indian cinema. The award will be officially presented at the 71st National Film Awards ceremony on September 23.
Born on May 21, 1960, in Kerala, Mohanlal is one of the most celebrated figures in Indian film history. With over 340 films to his credit, he has showcased unmatched versatility across genres. His accolades include five National Film Awards as well as India’s top civilian honours—the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan. While his dominance is rooted in Malayalam cinema, he has also delivered acclaimed performances in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi films.
The recognition comes at a significant time, as the actor remains a highly influential cultural figure in Kerala ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. His towering presence in the arts has not only elevated Malayalam cinema but also reinforced his stature as a pan-Indian superstar.
Reacting to the announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded Mohanlal’s contributions, calling him “a symbol of excellence and versatility.” The Prime Minister noted the actor’s deep commitment to Kerala’s culture while applauding his impactful performances across Indian cinema and theatre.
The Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest honour in the field of cinema, will mark another milestone in Mohanlal’s illustrious career, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest icons of Indian film.
