Delhi: Intelligence inputs have indicated that Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba may be planning attacks in the national capital and other parts of the country, with Delhi’s iconic Red Fort among the potential targets, according to sources in security agencies.
Officials familiar with the inputs said the group is suspected of exploring the use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at crowded and religious locations, including a temple in Chandni Chowk. Security has been stepped up at key installations and places of worship following the alert.
The warning comes against the backdrop of a recent suicide bombing at a mosque in Islamabad on February 6 that left at least 31 people dead and more than 160 injured. While the Islamic State claimed responsibility for that attack, intelligence sources believe that LeT operatives could be attempting retaliatory strikes in India, though no independent confirmation of such plans has been made public.
The fresh inputs have revived memories of the November 10, 2025 car blast near the Red Fort Metro Station, which claimed 12 lives and left nearly two dozen injured. Investigators later said the explosion was triggered by a vehicle laden with explosives that ignited in a busy area, setting nearby vehicles on fire.
Forensic analysis had identified the driver as Umar Mohammad, also known as Umar Un Nabi, a medical professional linked to a private university in Faridabad. Investigators alleged that he detonated the vehicle-borne explosive device after two alleged associates were apprehended and a large cache of explosives was seized in Haryana days earlier.
In that case, several suspects were arrested and remain in judicial custody as the probe continues. A Delhi court recently granted the National Investigation Agency additional time to complete its investigation into the November blast.
Authorities said they are closely monitoring the latest intelligence and coordinating with central and state agencies to prevent any potential threat. Senior officials have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, while emphasizing that security arrangements in the capital have been reinforced as a precautionary measure.
