Delhi Weather: Torrential Rain Triggers Severe Waterlogging, Fresh IMD Alert Raises Commuters’ Concerns

New Delhi: Heavy rain once again disrupted life across Delhi, with several parts of the national capital reporting severe waterlogging, flooded roads and traffic congestion. The spell, which began on Monday, continued into Tuesday morning, creating difficulties for commuters and residents in several low-lying areas.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued weather alerts as rainfall intensified, with the situation becoming particularly challenging during the morning commute.

Heavy Showers Continue Across Delhi

Rain clouds remained over the capital through Tuesday morning, with intense showers reported in several areas.

Shantipath, RK Puram, Bhikaji Cama Place and Connaught Place were among the locations affected by heavy rainfall. Water accumulated on a number of roads, slowing traffic and making movement difficult.

Several residential areas also reported water entering homes after drainage systems struggled to cope with the volume of rain.

Severe Waterlogging Disrupts Traffic

The prolonged rainfall resulted in extensive waterlogging across the city.

In Sangam Vihar, water reportedly reached waist height on Shani Bazar Road. Major stretches in Nangloi, Mundka and Kirari also remained inundated for extended periods.

The Zakhira underpass was another trouble spot, with accumulated water affecting traffic movement.

Central Delhi was not spared either. Waterlogging was reported around South Avenue Road, Mandi House, Mahadeva Road and Connaught Place, where water reached knee-deep levels in some stretches.

Dwarka and Other Areas Also Affected

Residents in Dwarka faced similar problems as rainwater collected on several DDA roads. Traffic congestion intensified as vehicles struggled to pass through flooded stretches.

The situation became particularly difficult after schools closed for the day, when increased traffic added to the pressure on already congested roads.

Commuters in several parts of Delhi were forced to take longer routes or wait for water levels to recede.

Why Is Delhi Receiving Heavy Rain?

According to the weather department, the current spell is linked to the combined influence of a Western Disturbance and the monsoon system.

A Western Disturbance is active over the middle and upper levels of the atmosphere, while the monsoon trough extends towards southwestern Uttar Pradesh. A low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal is also influencing weather conditions in the region.

The combination of these systems has contributed to increased rainfall over Delhi and neighbouring areas.

Weather Likely to Improve From Wednesday

The latest forecast indicates that rainfall activity is expected to gradually decrease from Wednesday, after which Delhi could see predominantly dry weather for the next few days.

However, the latest spell has caused significant disruption, particularly on roads and in low-lying neighbourhoods.

With waterlogging affecting several important routes, commuters are likely to face delays until drainage improves and accumulated water clears from the affected stretches.
