Chandigarh: The Centre has approved a one-year extension in the tenure of Chandigarh Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kanwardeep Kaur, allowing her to continue in the post beyond March 2026.

The decision was cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), headed by the Prime Minister, following a proposal from the Ministry of Home Affairs. According to an official order issued on March 16, the extension applies to her inter-cadre deputation from the Punjab cadre to the AGMUT cadre for the Chandigarh segment.

The communication, signed by a senior official from the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, has been circulated to key offices, including that of Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, along with other senior administrative authorities at the Centre and in Punjab and Chandigarh.

A 2013-batch IPS officer, Kanwardeep Kaur took over as Chandigarh SSP on March 9, 2023. She was chosen for the role from a shortlist of officers recommended by the Union Home Ministry. Her initial deputation was for three years.

Prior to her current assignment, she held key policing roles in several Punjab districts, including Ferozepur, Nawanshahr and Kapurthala. She also holds the distinction of being the first SSP of Malerkotla after it was declared a separate district.

An alumna of institutions in Chandigarh and Mohali, she completed her engineering degree from Punjab Engineering College before joining the Indian Police Service.

With this extension, Kanwardeep Kaur continues as one of the few women to have held the top policing position in Chandigarh. She is the second woman to occupy the post after Nilambri Vijay Jagdale, who served as SSP from 2017 to 2020.
