Amritsar: In a major crackdown on illegal arms trafficking and narcotics smuggling, Amritsar Rural Police have dismantled two suspected supply networks and arrested four people. The operation led to the recovery of 15 kg of opium, an M16 rifle, nine illegal pistols and 25 live cartridges.
According to preliminary investigations, the arrested accused allegedly have links with smugglers operating from foreign locations and are suspected of being involved in procuring illegal weapons. Investigators are now working to establish the extent of these connections and determine how the weapons and narcotics were being sourced and distributed.
Police have registered separate First Information Reports (FIRs) at Gharinda and Lopoke police stations in Amritsar district. Further investigation is underway to trace both the backward and forward linkages of the alleged networks, including the sources of supply, intended recipients and other individuals who may have played a role in the operations.
The recovery of the sophisticated M16 rifle, along with nine pistols and live ammunition, has brought the suspected illegal weapons network under further scrutiny. Police are also investigating the alleged narcotics supply chain connected to the seizure of opium.
Punjab Police said they remain committed to keeping a close watch on illegal arms trafficking and organised criminal activities. The department reiterated its resolve to take strict action against individuals and networks involved in the unlawful procurement, supply and circulation of weapons.
With the investigation continuing, authorities are seeking to identify additional suspects and establish the full extent of the two alleged networks.
