CHANDIGARH: A horrific incident has unfolded in the heart of Chandigarh as Suhani, a 23-year-old student, was brutally murdered in the Fragrance Garden of Sector-36 on Sunday night, February 22, 2026. Suhani, a third-year B.A. student at Panjab University and an aspiring UPSC candidate, was allegedly stabbed in the neck by an acquaintance following a dispute over her upcoming marriage.

The accused has been identified as Vinay, a 25-year-old native of Madhubani, Bihar, who worked at a local sweets shop in Sector-35. According to family members, Vinay had been stalking and harassing Suhani for over a year. The situation escalated recently after Suhani’s marriage was fixed with a resident of Sector-56, with a wedding date scheduled for June.

The Final Phone Call

The tragedy began when Suhani left her home on Sunday evening, telling her mother she was going to buy chocolates. When she failed to return after 15 minutes, her mother, Anita, made several calls to her. On the fourth attempt, Suhani answered in a trembling voice, gasping: “Mummy, Vinay has stabbed me… please save me.”

The family immediately rushed to the park, where they found Suhani bleeding profusely from a wound to her neck. Despite her father’s desperate pleas for help, the family alleges that the police delayed taking her to the hospital while waiting for an ambulance. Eventually, her father carried her out of the park himself and rushed her to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Sector-16, where she was declared dead on arrival.

Police Investigation and Arrest

The Chandigarh Police have registered a case of murder against Vinay. Early reports indicate that the accused had called Suhani to the park on a pretext to discuss her marriage; when she refused to reconsider her decision, he allegedly attacked her.

  • The Suspect: Vinay, described by the family as a drug addict who frequently troubled the victim, fled the scene immediately after the crime.

  • Current Status: In a swift response, police teams launched a manhunt and have since arrested the accused. He is currently being interrogated to determine if the attack was pre-planned.

  • Community Mourning: Suhani was well-regarded in her neighborhood and at Panjab University. She also worked at a local clinic in Sector-22 to support her family while preparing for the civil services examination.
