Chandigarh: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered a decisive victory in the Chandigarh mayoral election, with party councillor Saurabh Joshi elected as the new mayor on Thursday. The BJP secured 18 votes, ensuring a comfortable win in the civic poll.
Notably, congratulatory messages were extended to Saurabh Joshi even before the voting process began, indicating strong support in his favour. Unlike previous elections held through secret ballot, this year’s mayoral election was conducted by a show of hands by councillors, marking a significant procedural change.
For the first time, all three major parties contested the mayoral election independently. In the last two mayoral polls, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress had fought the election as alliance partners.
According to sources, seven people, including a Member of Parliament, voted in support of the Congress mayoral candidate. Voting will also be held separately for the posts of senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor.
The election outcome highlights a shift in Chandigarh’s civic politics, with the BJP consolidating its position in the municipal corporation.
