Coimbatore: A 19-year-old college student was allegedly sexually assaulted by three unidentified men near Coimbatore International Airport on Saturday night, sending shock waves across the city and prompting swift action from law enforcement authorities.
According to police reports, the survivor and her male friend were sitting near an isolated stretch close to the airport when a group of men confronted them. The attackers allegedly chased away the woman’s friend before sexually assaulting her. Both victims sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.
The incident took place in an area considered part of the airport’s high-security zone, raising concerns about public safety and policing in the vicinity. Senior police officials said seven special investigation teams have been constituted to identify and apprehend the suspects. “We are analysing CCTV footage and have intensified patrols in the surrounding areas. The culprits will be brought to justice soon,” an official said.
Local residents expressed fear and outrage following the attack, demanding stronger police presence and better lighting in the area. The crime has once again drawn attention to women’s safety in Tamil Nadu, particularly in urban and semi-urban zones that are often poorly monitored at night.
Political reactions also followed swiftly. BJP state president K. Annamalai condemned the incident and blamed the ruling DMK government for failing to curb crimes against women. “Since the DMK took office, there’s been a disturbing rise in such incidents. Law enforcement seems hesitant to act decisively against offenders,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter), accusing the government of shielding sexual offenders instead of ensuring justice.
The assault has sparked widespread outrage on social media, with citizens demanding fast-tracked investigation and stricter penalties for sexual crimes. Women’s rights groups have also urged the state government to improve security near public transport hubs and secluded areas.
As of Monday, police said preliminary evidence had been collected and efforts were underway to trace the attackers. “We will not rest until those responsible are arrested,” said a senior officer involved in the probe.
Authorities have appealed to the public to remain calm and cooperate with investigators while assuring that enhanced security measures are being implemented across the city.
