Panchkula: A Haryana Police constable, Deepak, lost his life in a tragic road accident late Saturday night while on duty at a traffic checkpoint near the Chandi Mandir toll plaza. The incident occurred around 11 PM when a speeding truck crashed through a barricade and fatally struck the constable.

Deepak, who was stationed at Surjanpur Traffic Police Station, was part of a drink-and-drive checking team when the truck violated the checkpoint and ran over him. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene, but was apprehended shortly after by police teams near ITBP Bhanu.

According to officials, the accused has been subjected to drug testing, and a case has been filed under Section 105 of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). An investigation is currently underway to determine the exact circumstances and any possible intoxication or negligence on the part of the driver.

Remembering a Dedicated Officer

Deepak hailed from Pillukheda village in Jind district. He is survived by his parents, wife, and two young children — a 10-month-old son and a 6-year-old daughter. His funeral will be conducted with full state honours today, as per an official police statement.

The Haryana Police and state officials have expressed deep sorrow over the loss. Director General of Police (DGP) O.P. Singh paid tribute to the late constable, stating:

“Deepak’s sacrifice is a solemn reminder of the risks police officers face every day in service to the public. He exemplified commitment, discipline, and courage — values that define the Haryana Police.”

DGP Singh also offered condolences to Deepak’s family, assuring them that the department and government will provide all necessary financial support and relief as per policy.

Legal Action and Department Response

The police have committed to pursuing strict legal action against the truck driver, vowing that “no leniency will be shown.” The department also emphasized that all efforts will be made to ensure maximum punishment for the accused under the law.

In a statement, the Haryana Police reiterated their support for Deepak’s family, stating that the fallen constable’s commitment and bravery will always be remembered and honored.

The tragedy has sparked renewed discussion on the safety of on-duty officers, especially during late-night checkpoints, and the increasing dangers posed by reckless driving on highways.

The incident marks a sobering moment for law enforcement officers across the state — a reminder that duty on the roads often comes with significant risks.
