The move follows statements by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who accused high-ranking Obama-era officials of misusing intelligence agencies to damage Republican President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign. Gabbard alleged the existence of a “treasonous conspiracy” within the Obama administration, prompting the Justice Department to form a strike force to assess her claims.
A source familiar with the matter confirmed that Bondi personally directed a federal prosecutor to begin legal proceedings. The prosecutor is expected to present evidence to a grand jury, which may consider criminal indictments if the case moves forward. While the Department of Justice has declined to comment, the action was first reported by Fox News citing Bondi’s letter and insider sources.
President Trump hailed the investigation on his Truth Social platform, saying, “The TRUTH always wins out. This is great news.” Last month, Trump accused Obama of treason, claiming without evidence that the former president orchestrated a plot to falsely link Trump to Russia.
Obama’s spokesperson dismissed the allegations as “bizarre,” “ridiculous,” and an effort to distract from ongoing legal and political challenges.
The original 2017 intelligence assessment found that Russia had indeed attempted to influence the 2016 election through disinformation campaigns and cyberattacks, but it did not conclude that these efforts had altered the outcome. Moscow has repeatedly denied any interference in U.S. electoral processes.
