Kyiv: A fresh wave of Russian airstrikes struck Ukraine’s capital early Friday, leaving at least nine people injured, damaging multiple residential buildings, and causing widespread utility outages across Kyiv, local authorities reported. (Russia Ukraine War)
The assault, which occurred during the early hours, targeted civilian areas and triggered fires in a high-rise apartment complex. Emergency response teams were quick to the scene, rescuing more than 20 residents from a 17-story building, where flames engulfed the sixth and seventh floors.
According to Kyiv’s Mayor Vitali Klitschko, the attack also led to power outages and water supply disruptions on both the eastern and western sides of the city. Restoration efforts are underway, but several neighborhoods remain without electricity.
Hospitals Treat the Injured
At least five of the injured have been hospitalized with varying degrees of trauma, while others received on-site medical attention. Officials have not yet confirmed whether children were among the wounded.
“This is another brutal attempt to terrorize our civilian population,” Klitschko said in a statement. “Residential buildings were hit. People were asleep when the missiles came. The attacks are a blatant violation of international humanitarian law.”
Russia Escalates Aerial Assaults
The airstrikes are part of a broader intensification of Russian aerial attacks in recent months. Ukraine’s air defense systems have been under increasing pressure, with missiles and explosive drones being launched at key cities, including Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipro.
Ukrainian military sources reported that several incoming threats were intercepted overnight, but some projectiles managed to bypass air defenses, causing damage to infrastructure and residential areas.
“The enemy continues its strategy of psychological warfare by striking urban centers far from the front lines,” a spokesperson for Ukraine’s armed forces said. (Russia Ukraine War)
Civilians Left in the Dark
Friday’s air raid adds to the growing humanitarian strain on Kyiv residents. With power and water infrastructure hit once again, thousands of civilians are facing uncertainty as winter approaches. Municipal workers have been deployed to restore basic services as quickly as possible, but the frequency of attacks is stretching emergency resources thin.
International Response
The latest strikes have drawn condemnation from Western governments, with renewed calls for enhanced air defense support to Ukraine. Human rights groups are also raising concerns about the deliberate targeting of civilian zones in violation of the Geneva Conventions.
As the conflict grinds on, Kyiv residents continue to endure night after night of air raid sirens and explosions, with no clear end in sight. Friday’s assault is yet another reminder of the mounting toll Russia’s war is taking on Ukraine’s urban centers and its civilian population. (Russia Ukraine War)
