New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday praised what he called a “significant step” towards peace in the Middle East, following reports that Hamas has agreed to release Israeli hostages as part of a US-brokered initiative.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Modi expressed appreciation for US President Donald Trump’s role in steering the breakthrough, describing it as a meaningful move in efforts to bring lasting calm to the conflict-ridden Gaza region.
“Encouraging signs from the region. India welcomes President Trump’s leadership at this important juncture. We remain committed to supporting all initiatives aimed at a durable and just peace,” Modi said.
The development comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve the near two-year conflict between Israel and Hamas. Trump recently unveiled a ceasefire proposal that included the release of hostages, a halt to Israeli airstrikes, and a phased withdrawal of forces.
Following the announcement, Hamas confirmed its willingness to release the remaining Israeli captives and transfer administrative responsibilities in Gaza to other Palestinian groups. However, it emphasized that additional points in the proposal would require broader internal discussion among Palestinian factions.
Trump responded by instructing Israel to immediately suspend bombing operations in Gaza to ensure the safe transfer of hostages, calling the moment a “crucial opportunity” for peace.
India, which has consistently advocated for peaceful resolution through dialogue, reiterated its support for international diplomatic efforts and emphasized the importance of humanitarian considerations during conflict.
The Prime Minister’s message reflects New Delhi’s balanced approach—maintaining strong bilateral ties with Israel while continuing to champion the rights of Palestinians through multilateral engagement.
