IMD Weather Update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Meteorological Centre Chandigarh, has issued a heavy to very heavy rainfall alert for Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh between August 4 and 6, 2025.

In the past 24 hours, light to moderate rainfall was recorded in parts of Haryana and isolated areas of Punjab, while a few locations in Haryana reported heavy rain.

According to the IMD, rainfall activity is likely to intensify in the coming days. On August 4, light to moderate showers are expected at a few locations, followed by a significant increase in rainfall across northern and eastern Punjab, northern, eastern, and southern Haryana, and Chandigarh from August 5 onward.

Widespread light to moderate rainfall is predicted on August 5 in Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, while August 6 may see similar conditions in Haryana and Chandigarh. Isolated areas in northern and eastern Punjab could experience heavy rainfall (7 cm or more) on August 4–5. Similarly, heavy rain is expected in isolated parts of northern, eastern, and southern Haryana, including Chandigarh, from August 4–6.

A very heavy rainfall alert (12 cm or more) has been issued for August 5 in isolated areas of Yamunanagar, Karnal, Panipat, Sonipat, Jhajjar, Gurugram, Faridabad, Mewat, and Palwal districts.

The IMD has warned of possible impacts, including:

  • Waterlogging in low-lying areas
  • Damage to standing or harvested crops left in the open
  • Disruption in water and electricity supply
  • Traffic congestion due to slippery roads and reduced visibility
  • A rise in water levels in seasonal rivers and drains
  • Risk to weak or temporary structures

Farmers are advised to avoid irrigation and chemical spraying during this period, ensure proper field drainage, and store harvested crops in covered areas. Residents have been urged to stay indoors during intense rainfall, avoid waterlogged zones, and refrain from sheltering under trees during thunderstorms.

The IMD has also released a district-wise forecast and requested local authorities and the public to remain vigilant and take all precautionary measures.
