Coimbatore: An eight-member panel from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) reached Coimbatore Airport on Tuesday to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic stampede on September 27 that claimed the lives of 41 people in Karur district.
The committee, led by BJP MP and actress Hema Malini, will assess the sequence of events that led to the deadly incident and is expected to submit a detailed report to party leadership.
Speaking to reporters after arriving in Coimbatore, Hema Malini said, “We have come to Karur to understand how such a heartbreaking stampede unfolded. Our national president, JP Nadda, has also visited the affected families and met with the injured at the hospital. His visit was to offer condolences and stand in solidarity with those impacted.”
The panel is expected to interact with local authorities, eyewitnesses, and the families of the victims. The stampede reportedly occurred during a public distribution event that saw an unexpectedly large turnout, leading to chaos and overcrowding.
Sources indicate that the fact-finding team may also raise concerns over lapses in crowd control and emergency planning, particularly in light of the high number of casualties. The NDA has called for accountability and improved safety protocols for large public gatherings in the future.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves across Tamil Nadu and the country, prompting both political and administrative attention. The panel’s findings are expected to play a crucial role in guiding future measures to prevent such disasters.
