New Delhi: Households may have to spend more on dairy products this festive season as Amul has reportedly increased the prices of select ghee and butter packs ahead of Diwali. The revision comes amid a rise in festive demand and reports of limited supplies in several markets.
According to reports, the price of a 1 kg carton of Amul ghee has gone up by Rs 50, while a 500 g butter pack has become Rs 15 more expensive. The revised rates could add to household expenses as consumers stock up on dairy products for sweets and traditional festive dishes.
Amul Ghee And Butter: Check Revised Prices
The reported price changes cover four popular Amul products. Here is a comparison of their earlier and revised prices:
| Product | Earlier Price | Revised Price |
|---|---|---|
| Ghee, 1 kg carton | Rs 630 | Rs 680 |
| Ghee, 500 g pouch | Rs 325 | Rs 345 |
| Butter, 100 g pack | Rs 63 | Rs 66 |
| Butter, 500 g pack | Rs 310 | Rs 325 |
The 1 kg ghee carton has seen the steepest increase in absolute terms, with its price rising by Rs 50. The 500 g ghee pouch has become Rs 20 costlier, while the 100 g butter pack has seen a Rs 3 increase.
Why Have Amul Ghee And Butter Prices Increased?
The reported revision comes at a time when demand for branded dairy products has increased in parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan.
Media reports have linked the higher demand to enforcement action against suspected adulterated dairy products. The action has reportedly encouraged some consumers to opt for established brands.
Reports citing a cooperative leader associated with Amul said authorities had seized around 2 lakh kg of suspected counterfeit ghee across Gujarat and Rajasthan over the preceding six months. This development has reportedly added to demand for branded ghee and put pressure on supplies.
Festive demand is another factor. Ghee is widely used to prepare sweets and traditional dishes during Diwali, while butter remains a regular purchase for households and food businesses.
Ghee Shortages Reported In Several Markets
Retailers in Ahmedabad and Vadodara have reportedly faced limited availability of certain Amul products, particularly cow ghee.
Supply constraints have also been reported in markets such as Pune and Kolkata. However, the scale of the shortages and the reasons behind them may differ from one location to another.
How Will The Price Hike Affect Consumers?
The revised rates could increase grocery bills for households that regularly buy ghee and butter, particularly those purchasing larger quantities for festive cooking.
The reported hike also comes after the reduction in GST rates on several dairy products in September 2025, when the applicable rate was lowered from 12 per cent to 5 per cent. Amul had subsequently announced price reductions across several products.
With Diwali preparations driving demand, consumers may now have to account for the higher reported prices while planning their festive purchases.
