Gaza City: Israeli forces demolished multiple residential buildings in Gaza City, killing at least 31 Palestinians and forcing many others to flee, Gazan health officials reported, as Israeli tanks pushed deeper into the densely populated city.
Nearly two years into the conflict, Israel has described Gaza City as Hamas’ final stronghold. The military says the destroyed housing blocks were being used by militants and launched its ground operations in the area earlier this month. Among the dead on Sunday were a pregnant woman and her two children. The Israeli military did not immediately comment on civilian casualties, stating only that “numerous” militants had been killed.
Relatives combed through the rubble of a destroyed apartment building, salvaging what belongings they could. “The mother, the boy, the girl, and the baby in her womb — we found them all gone,” said Mosallam Al-Hadad, whose son was seriously injured and later had a leg amputated.
Witnesses reported Israeli tanks advancing west through Tel Al-Hawa, a southeastern suburb of Gaza City. According to the Israeli military, its operations in the city have killed 30 militants in recent days and uncovered weapons caches.
Estimates on displaced residents vary. Israel says more than 450,000 people have left Gaza City since September began, while Hamas claims under 300,000 have fled, leaving roughly 900,000 in the city.
Meanwhile, southern Israel experienced air raid sirens when Gaza militants fired two rockets across the border. One was intercepted, while the other landed in an open field. No casualties were reported.
The offensive has drawn international criticism, with some Western allies indicating plans to formally recognise a Palestinian state ahead of the upcoming UN General Assembly. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to announce recognition despite Israeli and US objections.
Families of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza have expressed alarm over the ongoing attacks. About 20 of the 48 captives are believed to be alive. Thousands rallied outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s residence in Jerusalem, urging him to negotiate an end to the conflict.
The October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks killed 1,200 Israelis and took 251 hostages. Israel’s campaign over the past two years has killed over 65,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians, and has led to widespread displacement, famine, and destruction across Gaza.
