Amritsar: A Dera Beas volunteer was killed and another was seriously injured after a firing incident over a land dispute in Gazewal village near Beas in Amritsar district on Saturday afternoon, police said.
The deceased was identified as Manjit Singh, while the injured volunteer was identified as Davinder Singh. Both were associated with Dera Beas and had reportedly reached the village to cultivate a piece of land when three to four people allegedly opened fire on them.
Manjit Singh died at the spot, while Davinder Singh sustained serious injuries. He was taken to the Civil Hospital in Baba Bakala Sahib for treatment.
What Led to the Firing in Amritsar’s Gazewal Village?
Preliminary information suggests that the incident was linked to a dispute over around six kanals of land involving the family of Yudhvir Singh, also known as Jodha.
According to the initial account, Sarwan Singh had sold his land to Dera Beas some time ago. Volunteers associated with the dera had arrived to cultivate the property when the firing took place.
Yudhvir Singh, Sarwan Singh’s brother, allegedly continued to claim rights over the land. Police are investigating the dispute and the circumstances that led to the shooting.
Three Accused Arrested, Weapons Recovered
Amritsar Rural SSP Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal said police had arrested three accused in connection with the case. They include Yudhvir Singh, his wife and their son.
Police also recovered a Glock pistol, a 12-bore gun and ammunition, the officer said.
Chahal further said that Yudhvir allegedly scuffled with police personnel while being taken into custody and attempted to snatch the pistol of ASI Jatinder.
During the ensuing police response, Yudhvir sustained injuries and was admitted to a hospital, the SSP said.
Police said the preliminary investigation points to a land dispute as the motive behind the firing. Further investigation is underway.
