New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri for a Rajya Sabha seat from Madhya Pradesh, ending uncertainty over his political future after the party declined to renominate him from Uttar Pradesh in the recent round of biennial elections.
The nomination, announced on Wednesday, follows the resignation of Union Minister L. Murugan, which created a vacancy in the Upper House. The by-election to fill the Madhya Pradesh seat is scheduled for November 12.
The move is significant for Puri, who is serving as Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas. His nomination is expected to secure his continuation in Parliament and strengthen his position in the Narendra Modi-led Union Cabinet.
BJP Reaffirms Confidence in Puri
Puri’s political future had come under scrutiny after the BJP left him out of its list of candidates for the recent Rajya Sabha elections from Uttar Pradesh. The party had selected candidates with an eye on the state’s 2027 Assembly elections.
His nomination from Madhya Pradesh has now provided clarity on his parliamentary prospects. The decision also comes ahead of the next Punjab Assembly election, making it politically significant given Puri’s background and his previous electoral contest in the state.
Puri remains the only Sikh member of the Union Council of Ministers, a factor that adds to the political importance of the BJP’s decision.
Punjab Connection Adds Political Significance
Although Puri has represented neither Punjab nor Madhya Pradesh in the Lok Sabha, he contested the 2019 general election from Amritsar in Punjab as a BJP candidate. He lost to Congress leader Gurjit Singh Aujla.
With Punjab heading towards another Assembly election, the party’s decision to retain Puri in the Cabinet could be viewed in the context of its political preparations in the state.
The BJP has been seeking to strengthen its position in Punjab, where electoral competition remains intense. Puri’s experience in government and his familiarity with the state could be relevant to the party’s wider political strategy.
Opposition Allegations and Puri’s Response
Puri has also faced criticism from the Congress-led Opposition over alleged links to the late Jeffrey Epstein, who was convicted of sex offences involving minors. Puri has denied the allegations concerning his association with Epstein.
His nomination comes amid this political controversy, with the BJP’s decision signalling continued backing for the senior minister.
Rajya Sabha By-Election on November 12
The by-election for the vacant Madhya Pradesh Rajya Sabha seat will take place on November 12. The vacancy arose following Murugan’s resignation from the seat.
Puri’s nomination resolves questions surrounding his Rajya Sabha membership, as his existing term was due to end in November.
The development gives the BJP clarity on the minister’s parliamentary position as it prepares for upcoming electoral contests, including the politically important Punjab Assembly election.
