Washington DC: A major telecom outage on Friday led to significant flight disruptions at two of the busiest airports in the Dallas area, causing more than 1,800 flights to be delayed or canceled. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was forced to implement ground stops after a local telephone company equipment failure affected communication systems crucial for air traffic control.
According to the FAA, the issue was related to a local telephone service provider and did not involve FAA-owned equipment. The agency confirmed it was working closely with the telecom company to identify the cause of the disruption. “The FAA is slowing traffic as a precaution due to a reported telephone service outage. We are in contact with the service provider to resolve the matter,” the FAA said in a statement.
Airports Affected
The telecom glitch led to immediate flight delays and cancellations at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Dallas Love Field Airport (DAL). The FAA grounded all departing flights to Dallas-Fort Worth until at least 11 p.m. ET and delayed departures from Dallas Love Field until after 8:45 p.m. ET. As of late Friday, FlightAware reported that approximately 20 percent of flights departing from Dallas had been canceled.
Airline Responses
American Airlines, one of the major carriers based at Dallas-Fort Worth, was heavily impacted, with the airline canceling over 200 flights and delaying more than 500. This disruption accounted for nearly a quarter of the airline’s total scheduled flights for the day. Southwest Airlines also experienced significant operational challenges, with over 1,100 of its flights delayed — roughly 27 percent of its daily schedule.
The telecom outage caused cascading effects on air traffic control, leading to reduced operations at both airports and forcing airlines to adjust their schedules, impacting thousands of passengers.
Ongoing Efforts to Resolve the Issue
As authorities work to resolve the telecom service interruption, the FAA has advised passengers to check their flight statuses directly with airlines before heading to the airport. While some flights are resuming, delays are expected to continue throughout the day.
Both airlines and the FAA have been working to minimize the disruptions, but the extent of delays and cancellations may continue to impact travelers across the region. Passengers are advised to remain patient and prepared for changes to their flight itineraries.
