Amritsar: The accused identified as Deepak Singh, allegedly involved in the killing of Shaheed ASI Harjit Singh, died after being injured in an exchange of fire with Amritsar Police, Commissioner of Police Amritsar said.

According to the police, the incident took place during an operation launched in connection with FIR No. 281, registered on September 18 following the killing of ASI Harjit Singh in the line of duty at Dana Mandi under Police Station Gate Hakima in Amritsar.
Police said CCTV footage, technical inputs, tower-dump analysis and local intelligence were used during the investigation to identify and trace Deepak Singh, a resident of Mulechak, Amritsar.
Deepak Singh Injured In Retaliatory Fire
According to the Commissioner of Police, police teams were conducting an operation when the accused allegedly opened fire at police parties positioned at naka points.
Police said they retaliated in self-defence, during which Deepak Singh sustained gunshot injuries. He was taken to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Another suspect allegedly managed to escape under the cover of darkness, according to the police statement.
Weapon, Ammunition And Scooter Recovered
Police said they recovered a .30-bore pistol, two magazines and eight live cartridges during the operation.
A mobile phone and an Activa scooter allegedly used in the crime were also recovered, according to the Commissioner of Police Amritsar.
Investigation Into ASI Harjit Singh Killing Underway
ASI Harjit Singh, bearing service number 1599/ASR City, was killed in the line of duty on September 18 at Dana Mandi in Amritsar.
The police investigation into the case remains underway. Authorities are also working to trace the suspect who allegedly escaped from the spot.
