Rishikesh: The ambitious Rishikesh-Karnprayag new broad-gauge rail project reached a major milestone after Rail Vikas Nigam Limited completed the final breakthrough of Escape Tunnel-1. Spanning 10.847 kilometres, the newly excavated passage is the second-longest tunnel across the entire Himalayan rail corridor. With this excavation fully joined end-to-end, engineers have now achieved 41 out of 46 planned tunnel breakthroughs, leaving only five more to complete over the coming year as the project advances towards operational readiness.
The breakthrough is especially notable because of the severe geological complexities along the alignment. Construction crews had to navigate heavily tectonized, multi-folded, and extensively faulted rock formations that caused widespread shearing and localized rock crushing. These fragile subterranean conditions also produced thick mylonite zones, largely driven by the tunnel’s close proximity to the Main Boundary Thrust. Despite these structural hazards, technical teams used specialized tunneling methods to safely complete the passage.
Sanctioned to transform regional connectivity across Uttarakhand, the 125-kilometre rail line will link the National Capital Region and Rishikesh with remote Himalayan destinations, including Devprayag and Karnprayag. The route traverses five hill districts: Dehradun, Tehri Garhwal, Pauri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, and Chamoli. Given the steep mountain topography, the alignment runs mostly underground, requiring 16 main-line tunnels spanning 104 kilometres and 12 escape tunnels stretching roughly 98 kilometres. To date, crews have completed around 101 kilometres of main-line tunnels and over 95 kilometres of escape tunnels.
To expedite construction through the high-altitude terrain, engineers built eight intermediate adits covering roughly five kilometres, which provided multiple simultaneous work faces to accelerate underground drilling. The broader project also features 19 major bridges, 11 of which are already finished. Supported by ongoing regional railway surveys across northern India, the latest tunnel breakthrough significantly accelerates the timeline for delivering faster, safer, and all-weather rail travel into Uttarakhand’s interior.
