KOCHI — An Air India Express Boeing 737 operating flight IX 415 from Kochi to Abu Dhabi was forced to turn back and make a precautionary landing on Monday after flight crew detected a rapid drop in engine oil levels mid-flight. The narrow-body jet was approximately 50 minutes into its journey and cruising at an altitude of 36,000 feet when the cockpit crew observed the oil quantity in Engine 1 declining quickly.
Following established emergency protocols, the pilots performed a structured risk assessment to evaluate the operational hazard. As the oil level continued to deplete and the corresponding oil pressure crossed into critical parameters, the crew elected to abort the international sector, initiate an in-flight shutdown of Engine 1, and divert back toward the departure airfield.
The aircraft returned safely on a single operating powerplant, touching down without incident at Cochin International Airport. Emergency services and technical ground teams were placed on standby to inspect the airframe immediately upon arrival, with no passenger or crew injuries reported during the mid-air scare.
