Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday outlined the government’s comprehensive post-flood action plan, announcing a Rs 100 crore emergency initiative aimed at restoring normalcy in the flood-hit regions of the state.
Speaking at a press conference, the Chief Minister said the floodwaters had begun to recede across several districts, but the aftermath—including heavy silt deposits, livestock casualties, and risk of disease—requires immediate and coordinated response.
“Water is reducing in many areas, but large amounts of silt have accumulated. We’re launching a state-backed clean-up operation with full logistical support to every village,” Mann announced.
Massive Clean-Up and Disease Prevention Operation
The government has pledged to deploy JCB machines, tractor trolleys, and labour teams to villages impacted by the flooding. These crews will be responsible not only for clearing silt but also for removing and disposing of dead livestock—a potential source of health hazards.
In a proactive move to prevent post-flood outbreaks, the government will initiate fogging operations in affected regions to combat mosquito-borne diseases and other infections.
Each flood-affected village will receive an initial grant of Rs 1 lakh, with additional financial support to be allocated based on specific requirements assessed on the ground.
“This is just the beginning. Villages will receive more funds as their needs are evaluated,” said the Chief Minister.
Health Infrastructure and Veterinary Response Scaled Up
Highlighting public health as a critical concern, CM Mann said medical camps will be set up in 2,300 flood-affected villages, while 550 ambulances will be made available to ensure emergency response and healthcare access.
The government is also turning its attention to the 2.5 lakh animals reportedly impacted in over 713 villages. Specialized veterinary teams have been dispatched to treat and protect livestock from disease outbreaks.
Call for Community Participation
Mann extended an open invitation to non-governmental organizations (NGOs), youth groups, and civil society volunteers to assist in the relief efforts, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to a collaborative recovery model.
“We welcome everyone who wants to support Punjab in this time of need. Together, we will rebuild our villages and ensure a healthy environment for all,” he said.
Optimism Amid Crisis
Ending his address on a hopeful note, the Chief Minister emphasized resilience and unity, stating:
“I have complete faith that Punjab will emerge stronger from this disaster. We will rebuild and move towards a ‘Rangla Punjab’—a vibrant and thriving state once again.”
