Phillaur: Punjab Police on Tuesday stepped up its efforts to promote more inclusive and victim-sensitive policing, with Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav visiting the 134-year-old Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Police Academy in Phillaur to inaugurate the third round of training under the Gender Sensitisation Project, “Mainstreaming of Women in Punjab Police.”

The DGP also launched an Online Digital Portal for Ministry of Defence verification through the Punjab Police Saanjh Platform during his visit to the state’s premier police training institution.

The latest training round is aimed at strengthening the understanding and practical skills of police personnel in dealing with gender-related issues and cases involving vulnerable sections of society. Yadav said that the three statewide rounds of the programme are expected to train between 1,500 and 2,000 police personnel.

The training will focus on promoting gender-responsive, rights-based and victim-centric approaches to policing, with particular emphasis on women and children, besides other vulnerable groups.

Highlighting the importance of translating training into everyday police work, Yadav said the programme would be supported by trained Master Trainers, standardised learning modules and continued technical assistance from the Community Affairs Division (CAD), Hartek Foundation and J-PAL South Asia.

He said the initiative seeks to incorporate the principles of PPMMs into routine policing and strengthen the interaction between police personnel and citizens.

According to the DGP, a genuinely people-oriented police force must go beyond enforcement and ensure that its approach remains sensitive, inclusive and responsive to the needs of citizens.

The Punjab Police has reiterated its commitment to placing dignity, empathy and justice at the centre of policing, particularly while dealing with victims and vulnerable communities.

The launch of the digital verification portal alongside the gender-sensitisation programme also marks an effort to strengthen technology-enabled public services through the Saanjh platform.
