Amritsar: In a major breakthrough against cross-border drug trafficking, Amritsar Police have apprehended four more smugglers and seized 12 kg of heroin along with a .30 bore pistol and magazine, raising the total heroin recovery in the case to 20.1 kg, said Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav on Wednesday.

The latest arrests include Gurbhej Singh (50) and his son Gurdit Singh (22) from Narla village, Tarn Taran; Malkit Singh (50) of Dall village, Tarn Taran; and Gurjit Singh (29) from Kotli Saka village in Ajnala, Amritsar.

The operation follows the earlier bust where notorious drug smuggler Soni Singh, alias Soni, and his four associates—Gursewak Singh, Vishaldeep Singh alias Gola, Gurpreet Singh, and Arshdeep Singh—were arrested and 8.1 kg heroin recovered.

According to DGP Yadav, the newly arrested individuals were part of a strong network of a trans-border heroin cartel operating in Tarn Taran and rural Amritsar. The suspects used WhatsApp to communicate with each other and with Pakistan-based handlers. Investigations are ongoing to map further links in the cartel, and additional arrests are expected.

Commissioner of Police Amritsar, Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, stated that Gursewak Singh, during interrogation, revealed that Gurbhej Singh coordinated smuggling operations near the Tarn Taran border and maintained direct contact with foreign smugglers. Heroin consignments were reportedly delivered via drone to fields owned by associate Malkit Singh and hidden in cattle-sheds.

Police recovered 10 kg of heroin from an earthen pit at Gurbhej Singh’s residence. Further searches led to the arrest of Gurjit Singh, from whose home 2.006 kg heroin and a .30 bore pistol with a magazine were recovered, concealed in his bed mattress.

An FIR (No. 177 dated 06-09-2025) under sections 21-B, 27-A, 21-C, and 29 of the NDPS Act has been registered at Chheharta Police Station, Amritsar.

The police continue to investigate and trace additional connections in this sprawling narcotics network.
