Mumbai: Veteran Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane has officially announced his retirement from all formats of international cricket, bringing an end to a distinguished career spanning over a decade. The 38-year-old middle-order stalwart confirmed his decision through an emotional message shared on social media, stating that he felt the timing was right to move forward. Rahane leaves behind a rich legacy as one of India’s most dependable performers in overseas conditions and a respected leader who guided the national team through pivotal moments.
Representing India across 85 Tests, 90 One-Day Internationals, and 20 T20 Internationals, Rahane amassed over 8,000 international runs. His Test career was particularly notable for his composure under pressure, producing crucial centuries at iconic venues such as Lord’s and Melbourne. One of his defining managerial achievements came during the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he stepped up as stand-in captain to lead a depleted Indian side to a historical 2-1 Test series victory on Australian soil.
Having last featured in national colours during the Test tour of the West Indies in July 2023, Rahane had continued to serve in domestic cricket and captained Mumbai, leading them to a record 42nd Ranji Trophy title. Reflecting on his journey from traveling as a young boy from Dombivli to representing his country, Rahane expressed immense gratitude to the Board of Control for Cricket in India, his coaches, family, and supporters.
