Chandigarh– Punjab Local Government Minister Dr. Ravjot Singh announced today that the state will soon roll out 447 electric buses in Amritsar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Patiala and SAS Nagar (Mohali), equipped with modern charging facilities. The move marks a major step toward building a clean and sustainable public transport system.

Speaking at the “Punjab Conclave on E-Mobility and Sustainable Public Transportation,” Dr. Singh said the new fleet would transform urban mobility in the coming year. Highlighting the importance of sustainable urban growth, he noted that shifting from diesel to electric autos not only reduces emissions but also improves earnings for drivers. He further pointed out that women are increasingly part of the change, with over 200 already driving e-autos in Amritsar since March 2024.

The conclave, organised by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) in partnership with the Punjab Government on World EV Day, featured policymakers, experts, city officials and e-auto drivers. Amritsar’s rapid adoption of electric autos served as a model for other cities during the discussions.

Kulwant Singh, Director of the Department of Local Government, Punjab, underlined the state’s commitment to sustainable growth. He shared that 1,200 diesel autos in Amritsar have already been converted to electric, driven by strong policy support and community participation. Building on this momentum, he said the rollout of electric buses will be carefully planned by the Punjab Municipal Infrastructure Development Company (PMIDC), focusing on route rationalisation, charging infrastructure and service modernisation.

“Precision, pace and passion will guide Punjab’s journey toward clean mobility,” Kulwant Singh added.
