New Delhi: A Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology has issued summons to major global technology firms to discuss the evolving landscape of digital platform regulation. The meeting, scheduled for August 3 at 4:00 PM, will require representatives from Meta (Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp), Google, X (formerly Twitter), and Snapchat to appear before the panel alongside senior officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The committee, chaired by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, aims to address critical concerns regarding user safety and state stability. According to the official notice, the hearing will focus on how these digital entities protect the privacy of vulnerable groups—specifically women, children, laborers, farmers, and rural residents—while ensuring that their platforms do not facilitate the disruption of public order.

This high-level intervention follows the conclusion of a 36-day protest at Jantar Mantar, led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), regarding the NEET-UG examination paper leak. During the agitation, which ended Saturday following the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and government concessions, protesters leveraged Instagram and other social media channels to mobilize thousands of participants, disseminate real-time updates, and circulate viral footage of the demonstrations.

In a statement shared on X, Chairperson Nishikant Dubey emphasized that the inquiry is centered on the intersection of digital governance and national security. By summoning both government ministries and private tech giants, the committee intends to establish a clearer framework for how international platforms interact with local regulatory requirements, particularly in contexts where social media influence directly correlates with mass public mobilization.
