Glasgow: India enjoyed one of its most successful days at the Commonwealth Games 2026, with athletes delivering standout performances across multiple disciplines. Leading the charge was Sharmila Dhankar, who created history by winning the country’s second gold medal of the Games, helping India’s overall medal tally climb to 10 by the end of Day 5.
Sharmila emerged victorious in the women’s para shot put F57 final, producing a best throw of 9.81 metres to secure the top spot on the podium. Her triumph marked a historic milestone, making her the first Indian para-athlete to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal in athletics.
India’s medal count received another boost later in the event when Shilpa K. Shyla, who had initially finished fourth in the same competition, was elevated to the bronze medal position after Nigeria’s Euchariya Iyiazi was disqualified following a review of her throw.
The athletics arena also witnessed another memorable achievement as national record holder Sarvesh Anil Kushare secured a silver medal in the men’s high jump. Clearing 2.25 metres, Kushare became the first Indian high jumper to win a Commonwealth Games silver in the event.
Weightlifting continued to contribute significantly to India’s medal haul. Valluri Ajaya Babu claimed silver in the men’s 79kg category after an intense contest that went down to the final lift. The Indian lifter finished with a combined total of 330kg, narrowly missing gold by a single kilogram.
Earlier in the day, Gyaneshwari Yadav added another silver medal in the women’s 53kg weightlifting competition, while Bindyarani Devi secured bronze in the women’s 58kg division, further strengthening India’s position on the medal table.
India also made encouraging progress inside the boxing ring. Sachin Siwach (60kg), Ankush Panghal (80kg) and Sakshi Chaudhary (women’s 51kg) advanced to the quarterfinals, ensuring the country’s medal hopes remain alive. Under Commonwealth Games boxing rules, a semifinal berth guarantees at least a bronze medal.
With the latest results, India has now collected 10 medals at the Glasgow Games, comprising two gold, five silver and three bronze medals, while another medal has already been assured in boxing.
The strong showing across athletics, para sports, weightlifting and boxing reflects India’s growing depth across disciplines, with several athletes still in contention to add to the country’s medal tally in the coming days.
