He remarked to the assembled journalists that while his second presidential term was proving superior, a third term would be even better, before swiftly adding that he was only kidding. Under the 22nd Amendment of the United States Constitution, ratified in 1951 following the four-term presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt, no individual can be elected to the office of the president more than twice. Trump, who is currently serving his second non-consecutive term in the White House, would require a formal constitutional amendment to seek office again. During his address, the president also quipped about renaming future iterations of the event, claiming Paramount Skydance Chief Executive Officer David Ellison suggested branding it as the Trump White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
The annual black-tie dinner took place three months after its original April schedule was abruptly cancelled following a severe security breach at the Washington Hilton. During the earlier event, law enforcement officers apprehended an armed suspect, identified as Cole Allen, after he breached a security perimeter carrying loaded firearms and knives. Allen allegedly struck an officer before being subdued by United States Secret Service agents, prompting an immediate evacuation of senior officials. The suspect currently remains in federal custody facing multiple charges, including attempted assassination of the president, while several high-profile cabinet members joined Trump at Friday’s rescheduled gathering.
