DGCA Issues Warning Letter to IndiGo Over Cargo Spillage and Lapses in Safety Protocols

New Delhi: Aviation watchdog Directorate General of Civil Aviation has issued a formal warning letter to India’s largest carrier, IndiGo, after a safety audit exposed multiple deviations from standard operating procedures. The regulatory scrutiny directly follows a cargo spillage incident that occurred at the start of the year, raising compliance concerns regarding the handling of sensitive freight.

According to a regulatory filing made by parent company InterGlobe Aviation, the warning is linked to a ground-level cargo spillage detected following the arrival of an IndiGo flight in January 2026. The incident prompted the aviation regulator to launch a comprehensive safety audit of the airline’s ground and freight operations. The subsequent inspection uncovered critical procedural lapses, specifically citing non-compliance with standard operating procedures and certain provisions outlined under the Aircraft (Carriage of Dangerous Goods) Rules, 2026. The airline formally acknowledged receiving the regulator’s warning on July 8.

While the stock exchange notification did not clarify the precise nature of the spilled cargo or the specific flight route involved, the enforcement action comes amid a broader push by the civil aviation regulator to tighten operational discipline across domestic airlines. The watchdog has directed IndiGo to submit a comprehensive Action Taken Report detailing the structural and systemic modifications implemented to eliminate the safety gaps identified during the audit. InterGlobe Aviation clarified that the communication is strictly a warning and does not impose immediate financial penalties, operational restrictions, or fleet sanctions, assuring stakeholders that the development will not impact its financial health or scheduled flight operations.

The corporate filing also noted an internal administrative lapse, admitting that the formal disclosure to the stock exchanges was delayed. The parent company characterized the delay as entirely unintentional, attributing the timeline gap to an internal communication breakdown within the management hierarchy regarding the receipt of the regulatory notice.
