Shimla: Residents of Himachal Pradesh are expected to get temporary relief from persistent rainfall over the next two days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting a short pause in intense monsoon activity before another spell of heavy rain begins early next week.

According to the weather department, rainfall intensity is likely to remain subdued for the next 48 hours, with only isolated light to moderate showers expected in a few parts of the state. Most districts are not under any weather warning during this period, providing a brief window for restoration work in rain-affected areas.

However, meteorologists have cautioned that the respite will not last long. A fresh Western Disturbance is expected to become active from July 6, interacting with the monsoon system and increasing rainfall across several districts.

In anticipation of the changing weather pattern, the IMD has issued an Orange Alert for Kangra, Mandi, Shimla and Sirmaur for July 6 and 7, while a Yellow Alert has been sounded for Chamba, Kullu, Hamirpur and Una. Widespread rainfall, including heavy showers at isolated places, is also expected on July 8 and 9.

Weather experts said daytime temperatures may rise marginally over the next two days due to reduced cloud cover, but another decline of around 2 to 3 degrees Celsius is expected once the fresh rain-bearing system becomes active.

Meanwhile, the impact of the recent heavy rainfall continues to be visible across the state. Official data indicates that dozens of roads remain blocked, while power infrastructure and drinking water schemes have also been affected in several districts. Restoration teams are engaged in reopening roads and restoring essential services.

Rainfall statistics released by the IMD show that Himachal Pradesh has received significantly higher precipitation than normal during the opening days of July. Kinnaur has emerged as the wettest district relative to its seasonal average, recording an exceptionally high rainfall surplus. Several other districts, including Kullu, Kangra, Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur and Chamba, have also reported rainfall well above normal levels.

Only Lahaul and Spiti has recorded below-average precipitation during the current spell.

Authorities have advised residents and tourists to remain cautious despite the temporary improvement in weather. People travelling to hilly areas have been urged to monitor official forecasts, avoid landslide-prone stretches during rainfall, and follow advisories issued by local administrations as another active phase of the monsoon approaches.
