Sharing a photograph of Prime Minister Narendra Modi alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump declared, “Looks like we’ve lost India and Russia to deepest, darkest, China. May they have a long and prosperous future together!”
The post, which quickly went viral, has come at a sensitive time for U.S.-India relations. Last month, Washington announced new tariffs on a range of Indian exports, citing “unfair trade practices.” The move drew sharp criticism in New Delhi, with officials warning it could hurt the momentum of a partnership long described as one of the defining relationships of the 21st century.
Analysts believe these economic strains may have fueled Trump’s statement, as India continues to balance its ties with multiple global powers. While New Delhi has deepened defense and technology cooperation with the U.S., it has also maintained historical links with Russia and held pragmatic engagement with China, despite tensions at their shared border.
