Chandigarh: A significant change in weather conditions is expected across Punjab and Chandigarh, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting rain, thunderstorms and hailstorms in several districts over the next four days. The advisory remains in effect until June 14, with authorities urging residents to remain cautious during adverse weather conditions.

The Meteorological Centre in Chandigarh has also issued a short-term alert for rainfall across the Tricity region comprising Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula. Showers have already been reported from parts of Mohali, indicating the arrival of the predicted weather system.

Despite the approaching rain, temperatures across Punjab continue to remain unusually high. The state’s maximum temperature witnessed only a marginal change over the past 24 hours and continues to stay 4.4 degrees Celsius above the seasonal average. Bathinda recorded the highest daytime temperature at 46.2 degrees Celsius.

Forecasters have warned that hailstorms may accompany thunderstorms in several districts, including Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar and Fatehgarh Sahib, where unstable atmospheric conditions are expected to intensify.

Meanwhile, severe weather claimed the life of a nine-year-old boy in Mansa district after strong winds caused an iron gate and adjoining wall to collapse. The victim, identified as Dilshan Insan, was reportedly accompanying his grandfather to buy milk when the storm struck. As they sought safety, the structure gave way, fatally injuring the child.

Dilshan, a Class V student and the only son in his family, is survived by two sisters. His death has cast a shadow over the locality and highlighted the dangers posed by sudden and intense weather events.

Officials have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel during thunderstorms, stay away from weak structures and trees, and closely monitor weather advisories as the state prepares for another spell of unstable conditions over the coming days.
