New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on becoming India’s longest-serving elected prime minister, describing his tenure as a “glorious chapter” in the country’s democratic journey and praising his leadership for driving inclusive development and inspiring the nation’s youth.

In a two-page letter issued as Prime Minister Modi completed 4,399 consecutive days in office, surpassing the record previously held by India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, President Murmu said the milestone reflected the continued trust reposed in him by the people through successive electoral mandates.

“Your service as India’s longest continuously elected Prime Minister is not merely a matter of duration in public office, but an affirmation of the confidence of the people in your leadership,” the President wrote.

She said that in a nation as vast, diverse and vibrant as India, public trust remains one of the highest honours that can be bestowed upon a citizen. The repeated renewal of that trust, she noted, testifies to a significant chapter in the democratic history of the Republic.

Highlighting key achievements during Modi’s tenure, President Murmu pointed to major strides in financial inclusion, welfare delivery and women’s empowerment. She said millions of people had been brought into the formal economic system and described the large participation of women in these initiatives as a strong example of women-led development.

The President also lauded the government’s use of technology to improve governance, saying it had made public services more transparent, efficient, accountable and accessible. She noted that welfare benefits were now reaching citizens faster and with greater transparency, helping strengthen public trust in government institutions.

Murmu said one of the most notable aspects of the current administration had been the changing relationship between citizens and the government, with development increasingly driven by public participation, dignity and equal opportunity. According to her, citizens have moved from the margins of economic and social progress to becoming active partners in India’s growth story.

The President made special mention of initiatives aimed at tribal communities and underserved regions, including the PM-JANMAN scheme for Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups. She also highlighted the increased focus on eastern and northeastern India, regions that had historically lagged behind on several development indicators.

Referring to Modi’s political journey, Murmu said his rise from humble beginnings to becoming the country’s longest-serving elected prime minister demonstrated the strength of Indian democracy and its openness to individuals dedicated to public service, commitment and hard work.

She further praised the Prime Minister for energising India’s youth, saying his leadership had helped unlock their creativity and potential. “You have ignited the creativity and energy of our talented youth, who are scripting impressive stories of excellence,” the President wrote.

The letter was released as the Prime Minister crossed a significant political milestone, marking the longest uninterrupted elected tenure by any Indian prime minister since Independence.
