Tehran/Washington: Tensions in the Middle East escalated sharply after Iran claimed responsibility for launching strikes against United States military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, following a reported US military operation targeting Iranian positions.

According to Iranian authorities, the attacks were carried out in response to US airstrikes on several locations inside Iran after an American Apache attack helicopter was reportedly brought down. Tehran said the operation also targeted the headquarters of the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, one of Washington’s most significant military assets in the Gulf region.

The developments mark a significant escalation in the ongoing confrontation between Iran and the United States, raising concerns about a wider regional conflict involving multiple countries across the Middle East.

Meanwhile, the Kuwaiti military confirmed that its air defence systems were actively engaging hostile aerial targets. Authorities in Kuwait did not immediately provide details regarding the extent of the attacks, casualties or damage caused by the strikes.

Officials in Bahrain and Jordan have yet to release comprehensive statements on the reported attacks, while the United States has not officially confirmed the full scale of the Iranian operation.

The latest exchange of hostilities comes amid growing instability in the region, with military analysts warning that direct attacks on US installations could trigger a broader response from Washington and its allies.

Security agencies across the Gulf have reportedly been placed on high alert as governments monitor the rapidly evolving situation. International observers have expressed concern that further escalation could threaten regional security, disrupt global energy markets and impact international shipping routes in the Gulf.

The situation remains fluid, with both sides expected to issue further statements as details emerge.
