Jalandhar: Days after a high-profile love-related crime in Mohali, another disturbing incident has surfaced from Jalandhar, where a man allegedly set himself on fire near Sangam Vihar, close to Ladowali University, after reportedly being unable to pursue a relationship with a woman.
According to police, the injured man has been identified as Hitesh Mehta, who is currently undergoing treatment at Satyam Hospital after sustaining serious burn injuries.
Providing details of the incident, ACP Rajesh Thakur said preliminary investigations suggest that the act was linked to a case of one-sided affection. Police said the man allegedly took the extreme step after being unable to establish a relationship with the woman.
Officials added that no formal complaint has been received from the woman’s family so far. Sources indicated that the woman is already engaged.
Police said Hitesh had reportedly been trying to contact the woman for several months. On the day of the incident, he allegedly went to her residence to meet her. During the course of events, he is said to have set himself on fire, resulting in severe burn injuries.
Local residents and family members rushed him for medical treatment, and he was admitted to a private hospital where doctors are monitoring his condition.
ACP Thakur said the matter is under investigation and further action will be taken after recording statements from all concerned parties and examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Authorities have urged people facing emotional distress or personal crises to seek support from family members, friends, or mental health professionals rather than resorting to harmful actions.
